Mission
St. Gregory the Great Homeschool Cooperative was formed to aid Catholic
homeschooling parents in providing a consistent, quality, Catholic classical education for
their children.
St. Gregory the Great (SGTG) provides academically challenging opportunities in a
group setting.
SGTG offers a cooperative setting where parents join together to use their God-given
gifts and talents to teach the children of other families. The benefit is two-fold: it lightens
the teaching load for the homeschooling parent, and the homeschooled child benefits
from the accountability to and the perspectives held by other teachers. All parents
teach one or two classes.
Although structured learning is provided weekly in the classroom, the majority of the
student’s learning takes place daily at home. The goal of SGTG is to aid parents, not
replace them, in the task of homeschooling their children.
Classical Education
Classical education can be defined in terms of both method and content. In method, the
classical model embodies the stages of the Trivium, a three-part process of training the
mind: Grammar (roughly grades 1-4), Dialectic (grades 5-8), and Rhetoric (grades 9-
10). The early years are spent absorbing facts, systematically laying the foundation for
advanced study. In the middle years, students learn to think through arguments and in
the high school years, students learn to express themselves.
The content of classical education is composed of the study of Latin, logic, history, and
science and prepares the student to participate in the “great conversation” of western
civilization. At SGTG, the course syllabuses are based on the models put forth by
authors Dorothy Sayers, Laura Berquist, and Susan Wise-Bauer.
